Underwater Filming

Here is how this works in practice. We set up underwater operations across the Netherlands with certified Dutch dive teams and cinema-grade waterproof gear. Underwater filming captures visuals beneath the surface using specialty housings, lighting and careful safety protocols, and our dive shooters are filmmakers first — they know composition, movement and storyboarding as well as diving. The country is defined by water: the North Sea coast at Scheveningen, Zandvoort and Bergen aan Zee, the vast tidal flats of the Wadden Sea, the IJsselmeer, the rivers Rhine and Maas, the 17th-century canal ring of Amsterdam, and controlled studio tanks in the Amsterdam and Haarlem clusters.

Here is what we have to work with. Crews are near-universally fluent in English — the country ranks first worldwide for English proficiency — and equipped for the cold, often low-visibility conditions of Dutch waters. We operate pro housings for RED, ARRI and Sony cinema cameras, cold-water-rated lighting and through-water communication, and we give safety divers and supervisors for each shoot.

Here is the short of it. Water work in the Netherlands is set by both safety rules and site-level protection. Our team manages the permissions from start to finish. Commercial diving for film follows Dutch occupational diving standards, with risk assessments, dive plans and certified safety divers needed for each sequence. Coastal operations are set up with the country Coastguard. Filming in the Wadden Sea — a UNESCO World Heritage site and a Natura 2000 area shared with Germany and Denmark — needs site-level permits and strict observance of access rules.

Here is the layout. Canal filming in Amsterdam runs through the city with water-traffic planning. Port work involves the relevant harbour authorities. The temperate maritime climate brings cold water and changeable conditions year-round. Tidal movement on the coast and across the Wadden flats shapes each shooting window. Studio tanks at facilities including The country Film Studios in Haarlem and Studio Aalsmeer give a controlled alternative for actor work and product shots. The country Film Production Rebates — a 35% cash rebates on qualifying Dutch spend via the Netherlands Film Fund (Nederlands Filmfonds) — supports underwater production based in the country.
